Some fashion models with beautifully shaped heads may choose baldness as a part of their look but for most women, hair loss can be an overwhelming experience. It is rightly said, “Hair is the crowning glory” and losing excessive hair or even thinning of it can be a very disconcerting issue for women.
Certain amount of hair loss is normal but sometimes hair fall accelerates leading to emotional distress. Women try to find out different measures to treat hair loss and improve hair growth and appearance. However, to find the effective solution, one has to determine the correct cause of hair loss.
Some of the hair loss reasons in women are:
Stress
Studies have shown that women who are going through stressful phases in their life and those who are suffering from anxiety disorders are more likely to suffer from the problem of hair loss. This condition is called Telogen effluvium, which occurs in response to shock or emotional stress (death of a loved one). During this stage, hair undergoes in to resting phase (telogen phase) during which the activity of the hair slows down. Though hair loss caused by stress and anxiety is temporary in nature, it is important to learn how to manage stress in daily life.
Post-partum hair fall
Some women experience hair fall post-delivery. This is due to the decrease in estrogen hormone, which affects the growth cycle of the hair. During this phase, hair enters the resting phase.
Pregnancy
Hair fall is not common during pregnancy due to the high amounts of estrogen hormone secreted during the gestational period. The estrogen hormone helps in nourishing your hair. However, some women may encounter this problem of hair loss during pregnancy. The hormonal imbalances during pregnancy cause the changes in hair texture and growth. Other reasons of hair fall and hair thinning during pregnancy are deficiency of nutrients in diet and thyroid imbalance.
Androgenetic alopecia
Hereditary hair loss or androgenetic alopecia is one of the major causes of hair fall in women. This condition starts slowly and may start as early as in your 20s. The hair loss gene is inherited from mother or father or both the parents. Hair loss occurs due to the conversion of androgen hormone in to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.
Medical condition
At times, alopecia is the result of any underlying medical condition. Polycystic ovarian disease, iron deficiency anemia, hypothyroidism and autoimmune disease (lupus) are a few medical conditions that cause hair fall. These conditions are also associated with other signs and symptoms, which help in diagnosing the condition.
Traumatic alopecia
This is due to overuse of hair chemicals and treatments and hair styling methods, such as relaxers, hot combs, straighteners or hair braiding methods. Tight rollers, tight braiding, commercial relaxer products and excessive use of fragranced hair products can cause thinning of hair fibers and cause hair loss.
Once the underlying cause of hair thinning and hair fall is diagnosed, your dermatologist will provide you an effective solution to treat hair fall and hair thinning.
